Taking Care of the Elderly

The next time you see someone pushing an elderly person in their wheelchair, stop and tell them thank you. Thank you for being a caregiver for a person in need. Thank you for taking time out of your busy day to provide care to a valuable and loved human being.

The role of caretaker is not an easy one. Every waking minute is spent worrying about your loved one, wondering, do they need anything right now? Are they able to feed themselves on their own, or do they need me to come there immediately? Care taking for elder people can really suck the life out of you, but at the same time, it builds you up again because you're putting someone else's needs ahead of your own, and there is honor in that.

The elderly need help in many areas. They need someone to take them to doctor appointments, to cook for them, and in some cases to feed them. They need someone to do their laundry and clean their house. But most of all, they need to know that they are loved, and if you will just reach out your hand to them, to provide help in whatever form that entails, then you are making the world a better place.

It must be extremely frustrating for the elderly when they get to the point that they can no longer take care of themselves. They really despise asking for help, but they are at a loss to do anything for themselves. This is where the personal caretaker comes in. If just one person will help in whatever way possible to provide comfort and care to the elderly, the sad estate of the aging saints can be overcome, and yes, it is possible for each elderly person to know that someone cares about them. So take time out of your busy day to do one nice thing for an elderly person, and you will be able to love them as well as yourself.
